GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- As with any sequel, Alabama-Clemson II will have some new characters and fresh plot lines.
The top-ranked Crimson Tide and No. 3 Tigers will meet in Tampa, Florida, on Jan. 9 in the College Football Playoff national championship game. Last year they played a wild 45-40 game won by 'Bama. It gave Nick Saban a fourth national title with the Tide and fifth overall.
The rematch is a chance for Saban and Alabama to add to an already unprecedented run of four national championships in seven years. For Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, it is another opportunity to beat his beloved alma mater and snap a title drought for the Tigers that stretches back more than three decades.
Deshaun Watson is back. The Clemson quarterback was so good last season against the Tide that Saban was comparing him to Cam Newton.
O.J. Howard returns for Alabama, the tight end who had a career game in last year's final. Both teams once again feature fearsome defensive lines, even though some of the stars have changed.
But there's plenty new this time around:
HURTS SO GOOD
Alabama's Jalen Hurts is a victory away from becoming the first true freshman quarterback to lead a team to a national championship since Jamelle Holiewaydid it with Oklahoma in 1985 . Last season Jake Coker was the Tide's quarterback, a more conventional drop-back passer who threw for 335 yards on 16 completions, including five for 208 to Howard.
With Hurts, the Tide has become far more reliant the quarterback running game. Hurts is still a work in progress in the passing game. He went 7 for 14 for 57 yards in Alabama's 24-7 victory against Washington in the Peach Bowl on Saturday . He did run 19 times for 50 yards and on the season he is up to 891 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Hurts is a more talented player than Coker, but if Alabama needs to trade scores with Clemson again, can the 18-year-old make the plays in the passing game that Coker did last year? Then again, Hurts' mobility will come in handy against a Clemson pass rush that ranks right up there with Alabama's.

Clemson and Alabama will once again play for the national title after convincing wins over Ohio State and Washington, respectively. Below, we'll break down the three biggest keys to the game.
Deshaun Watson got away with two interceptions against Ohio State, in part because of his 316 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, and in part, because the Clemson defense completely dominated Ohio State in a 31-0 College Football Playoff semifinal rout.
He won't get away with turnovers against Alabama, however.
The Crimson Tide have scored 15 non-offensive touchdowns this season, which is just ridiculous. Trying to solve the team's stout defense and balanced offense is difficult enough. Trying to beat Alabama while you're giving the ball away and giving away points to their defense and special teams?
Impossible.
Interceptions have been an issue for Watson all season long. He's thrown 17 of them, and it's been the one blight on an otherwise stellar campaign. Clemson has the talent to pull off the upset. It needs its star quarterback to play at an elite level to do so, however.

Against Washington, Hurts didn't need to be great. The team's defense was excellent and the run game unstoppable.
But Clemson almost assuredly will score more than seven points with Watson at the helm, and the aforementioned Clemson defensive line will make running the ball difficult. At some point in what seems likely to be a close game, Alabama will need its freshman quarterback to make clutch plays.
Will he deliver, or will the pressure of the moment be too great?
Thus far, Hurts has delivered. But he hasn't faced a defense this good, on a stage this grand, yet.
"We're not asking him to win the game by himself or throw the ball 50 times or something like that," former offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said after the win over Washington, per Rainer Sabin of AL.com. "His numbers weren't very good. But that was part of the plan. Make sure every drive ends in a kick."
Clemson will try to throw a wrench in that plan. The Tigers will try to force Alabama out of playing conservative, smashmouth football and instead put the fate of the game in Hurts' hands. If Clemson succeeds at doing so, how Hurts handles the challenge will likely decide the national championship.

There just might be an antidote to Alabama's best-in-the-nation defense. His name is Deshaun Watson.
Clemson's junior quarterback rolled up 478 yards and directed the Tigers to 40 points in last season's national championship loss to the Tide. He's back for more -- especially a ring -- when No. 1 Alabama (14-0) and No. 2 Clemson (13-1) play Monday in Tampa, Fla., for this season's title (8 p.m. ET, ESPN).
"Deshaun Watson has played big in every game since he's been at Clemson," Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said. "I think he's played great his whole three years. I mean, great."
If anybody is going to unravel the Tide, it's Watson. He's an athletic dual-threat. He has a big arm and go-deep receivers. That all means big plays. You don't beat Alabama with methodical 12-play, 75-yard drives. You need "chunk" plays. You need "splash" plays.
Clemson carved up Alabama with 10 plays of 20-plus yards last season. Contrast that to Saturday, when the Tide allowed one such play -- a 20-yard pass -- in a dominating 24-7 semifinal victory over Washington.
"I thought he played fantastic against us last year," Alabama coach Nick Saban said of Watson.
"He may be arguably the best player in college football. The guy is very athletic. He's got a great understanding of their offense. He does a really good job of executing for his team. He can extend plays. He can run. He can run quarterback runs. And he's a terrific passer. I mean, he is the complete package."
The knock on Watson -- the Heisman runner-up this season and third-place finisher last year -- are his 30 interceptions in 29 games in the past two seasons.
While that might be disconcerting for Clemson fans, it's probably not as distressing as losing your offensive play-caller the week before the season's biggest game.
That's the highly unusual position Alabama is in after Saban parted ways with Lane Kiffin on Monday, saying that Kiffin hasn't been able to successfully juggle two jobs since accepting the coaching position at Florida Atlantic.
Saban elevated offensive analyst Steve Sarkisian to coordinator. Sarkisian has been involved with the planning of the offense this season, but, by NCAA rule, wasn't able to coach at practice or otherwise instruct the players.
Now, Sarkisian directs freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts and tries to find a play-calling rhythm against a Clemson defense coming off a 31-0 shutout of Ohio State.
Hurts has many of the same qualities as Watson, just in a younger package. In fact, when he enrolled early at Alabama at last year's winter break, he played the role of Watson on the Tide's scout team in preparation for the title game, won 45-40 by the Tide.
Hurts was the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, directing an offense that was best when it played up-tempo. Alabama often relied on its ground attack, led by Hurts and running backs Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough, but it has multiple threats in the passing game, including receivers ArDarius Stewart and Calvin Ridley, and tight end O.J. Howard, the offensive MVP of last season's championship game.
"I guess you've got some nuances that might be a little bit different maybe from a play-call or something like that, but it's not like they're going to come out and run the triple option," Swinney said of Alabama's change of coordinators.
"They're going to do what they do. It's just as simple as that. Why would they change? Nobody has stopped them."
Alabama, going for its fifth title in eight seasons, leads the country in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense. Clemson is salty, too, seventh in scoring defense and eighth in total defense.
One mistake by either quarterback could be the difference. Alabama has scored 11 times on defense this season and will be hunting off-target throws by Watson. Clemson, as is its usual strategy under coordinator Brent Venables, will bring defensive pressure and force Hurts to make quick decisions and complete passes in the intermediate and deep zones.
No true freshman quarterback has led his team to the national championship since 1985, when Jamelle Holieway did so for Oklahoma.

Clemson is going for its first national title since 1981, and Swinney said these Tigers have "more juice" than the 2015 squad. Meanwhile, at Alabama, winning never gets old.
"When you play an outstanding opponent, that's something that in and of itself as a competitor is motivation," Saban said. "And that's certainly the case in this game."
The Alabama Crimson Tide played the Washington Huskies in the Peach Bowl and won 24-7. The Clemson Tigers played the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl and won 31-0. The championship game will pit Alabama against Clemson. The game will be a rematch of the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship which saw Alabama defeat Clemson 45-40.
