ONE THING IS FOR SURE, Samsung devices aren't getting any smaller. The firm's tablets' and smartphones' screen sizes seem to grow with every iteration, with the Galaxy S smartphones and the Galaxy Note phablets being prime examples. As the firm pushes the limits on how big they can get, it won't be long before people start saying, "Woah, enough is enough!"

For some reason, the masses haven't collectively said that yet, so the South Korean company continues to expand the size of its devices' screens.

Samsung went one step further in January when it announced its Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 tablet at CES, which is a Galaxy Note 3 with a foot long LCD screen but without the calling tools. However, it has some other nifty features that the Galaxy Note 3 doesn't to make it more of a tool for professionals.

Design and build

The Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 design will appear familiar to those who have seen a Galaxy Note 3, as it replicates the same design. For example, it has the faux leather back plate that we didn't much like, as well as mostly plastic construction stretched across a larger 12in frame.

Our thoughts haven't changed here. As with the Galaxy Note 3, we still think the faux leather backplate makes the £650 tablet not only look like a budget device, but ugly as well. However, the faux leather back does give the hand something a little firmer to hold on to than polished metal or shiny plastic, so despite not feeling like a premium material it's comfortable to hold.

The good thing about its mainly plastic construction is that the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is really light and thin as a result, weighing just 750g, which isn't half bad for a 12in tablet. It's also quite slim, measuring just under 8mm thick.

Holding the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 in one hand and an Apple iPad Air in the other, there really isn't as much difference as we'd have expecte. While the smaller iPad is noticeably lighter, we were surprised Samsung's tablet didn't feel much heavier in comparison based on its larger size.

Unfortunately, Samsung hasn't taken advantage of the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2's size by adding more I/O ports. It has the rather limited configuration of a microSD card, audio jack and USB 3.0 ports, which isn't as many as we'd hope for in a £650 device.

One thing that feels strange about the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is that the Samsung logo and button arrangement has been placed in a way that means you have to hold it horizontally when in use, as the home, back and multi-tasking buttons are placed on the longest side of the device. While this makes sense for a device this size, considering how large it is we would have expected Samsung to have made a dock of some kind available for purchase along with the tablet, as it's a little too big to hold for long periods while watching movies, for example. It would also be nice to see an external keyboard option, especially for a tablet aimed at professional users.

Nevertheless the design, though not in the premium category in terms of build quality, does lend the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 a friendly ergonomic feel and is very easy to get used to, as it is comfortable to hold and carry around due to its relatively lightweight construction.

Next: Display, operating system and software.
