India dedicates Thursday to children - indiablooms

The doodle titled "Sky's The Limit for Indian Women" was designed this year by Gayatri Ketharaman, a 15-year-old girl, from Pune who was the winner of Doodle 4 Google contest for 2013.

Google hosts the doodle contest for school kids in India every year on a particular theme. The winner gets a chance to post his or her theme on Google's homepage on the Children's Day that should resemble the word 'Google'.

This year the Doodle 4 Google contest had three categories - one for students from class 1 to 3, category two was for students from class 4 to 6 and category three was for students from class 7 to 10.

The theme was "celebrating the Indian women" this year and class 10 student of Bishop's Co-Ed School in Pune, Gayatri was the overall winner.

The competition received 1.5 lakh entries this year in the contest held across 100 cities and 1,500 schools.

The doodle starts with a dancing woman who is arched to represent G of the w ord Google, while O has been crafted in the shape a one rupee coin, which also symbolizes a home, representing how Indian women take care of work as well as home.

In place of the next G, there are earth and moon, showing that the Indian women can achieve anything.

In place of L, there is a woman holding a kid, showing caring nature of Indian women and in place of E, there is a police cap, which signifies that if required the same Indian women can don different hats to become tough and brave.

While the world celebrates Children's Day on different dates, India observes the occasion on November 14, the birthday of the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru, who was fondly called Chacha Nehru (Uncle Nehru) or Chachaji (Uncle) by the kids, emphasized the importance of giving love and affection to children, whom he saw as the bright future of India.

To mark the day, several functions are organized in schools, offices and oth er organizations.

Most schools hold cultural performances on this day, which are run by the children themselves. Students are also granted the permission to dress up colourfully instead of their uniforms on this day.

The state and the central governments generally attempt to showcase children's films as part of film festivals organized in many parts of the country.

All over the country, various cultural and social institutions conduct competitions and sports events for children.

Gifts, chocolates and sweets are distributed in schools and children have a free hand since they are at full liberty to celebrate this day.

Politicians and celebrities also dedicated the day to children and Jawaharlal Nehru by posting their messages on social networking site Twitter.

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "I join the nation in remembering our 1st Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary."

Actor Anupam Kher wished children by saying:"Children are our second chance to have a great parent-child relationship. Happy Children's Day.:)."

Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee tweeted:"Happy Children's day.Affection and Love to every child of my country.God Bless."
