Google Transparency Report: Snooping by India high, 2691 requests sent to ... - Northern Voices Online

It was known to people, but the high extent was not known. Google Transparency Report shows that snooping by Indian govt. is very high. It sent 2,691 requests to Google for users' data.

It may look perplexing to many but nevertheless true that the nations that claim to be more democratic tend to be bigger snoopers on their citizens than the nations that don't claim. And nations from top of the world and from developing nations are no exceptions.

India and United States that claim to be the places of civil liberty, freedom and democracy score very high when it comes to snooping against their own citizens. India is among the nations that seek among the highest info about its citizens' online activities on social media and search engines. This has come to light as many such websites reveal these data for their users' satisfaction, but now a Google report has shown the extent of the Indian government's snooping activities about its own citizens.

But to be true Indian requests pale in comparison to the US, place of liberty and personal freedom as search giant's data suggests that the US made at least four times more requests than India. Google's latest report suggest that in the first half of the current year, India made as many as 2,691 requests for users' data compared to 10,918 requests by the United States. In the meantime the search giant has said that religious considerations have been the highest reason for removal of data from search giant's websites. A top Google official Richard Salgado said on Google blog that "This comes as usage of our services continues to grow, but also as more governments have made requests than ever before. And these numbers only include the requests we're allowed to publish". So the extent is going to be even higher that may come to our knowledge when search giant is allowed to divulge details decades later.
