Samsung has unveiled a new chip, the Exynos 7872, for mid-range smartphones.
After the presentation of the Exynos 9810 which should integrate the Galaxy S9, Samsung continues to renew its smartphone chips with the Exynos 7872, which is aimed at the mid-range.
Rising performance
This new SoC, already used on the Meizu M6S just released, is manufactured in 14 nm FinFET. Its processor uses 6 cores: 2 cores Cortex A73 clocked at 2 GHz and 4 hearts Cortex A53 clocked at 1.6 GHz. The graphics chip is an ARM Mali-G71 MP1. Samsung announces that this chip will be twice as powerful as the previous generation in tasks requiring a single heart.
A limited display definition
The somewhat curious feature of this new chip is the limitation of its display definition to 1920 x 1200 pixels. This means that the SoC can not be integrated into smartphones with 18: 9 screens with a definition of 2160 x 1080 pixels.
This should probably limit the use of this SoC to midrange devices.
Other features
If the Exynos 7872 supports Bluetooth 5.0, the latest version, it is limited to Wi-Fi support 802.11 a / b / g / n on both frequency bands (2.4 and 5 GHz ), while more and more smartphones are compatible with Wi-Fi 802.11 ac.
Storage will be limited to eMMC 5.1 technologies and SDXC cards, so the Exynos 7872 is not compatible with the more modern UFS memory. Finally, the chip supports the encoding and native decoding of Full HD videos at 120 frames per second in HEVC (H.265), H.264 and VP8.
