Asus announced that ZenFone 4 would have partial support of Treble. An effort that many competitors did not make with their flagships.
Project Treble: a complex subject
The most important novelty introduced by Google with Android 8.0 Oreo is not in the system itself, or is not a function accessible to the user, but the change of architecture brought by the project Treble. This is a reminder to change the organization of files and partitions of the system to separate the files of the manufacturer, specific to the device, files from Google.
Devices that are native to Android 8.0 Oreo need to implement this new architecture, but Android 7.0 Nougat devices that are updated do not have this requirement, since it could induce heavy changes for the phone. Nokia had also answered our questions about it, and announced not to support Treble on its terminals. OnePlus also disappointed his community by announcing the lack of support for his devices.
A partial support of Treble for Asus
In this regard, Asus will not be a bad student since the manufacturer has announced that the ZenFone 4 ZE554KL updated to Android 8.0 Oreo will support the Treble project. The brand specifies however that it is a partial implementation. Indeed, the brand took good care to separate the hardware-specific files from the phone, but could not create a dedicated partition as is normally the case with Treble. The reason is the same as with OnePlus or Nokia: it is difficult to create an additional partition on a smartphone through an update without the risk of losing data.
Asus files are therefore implemented on the system partition, which should not do the business of alternative ROM developers, but that should still facilitate the arrival of updates in the future.
