It was released on June 30, 2014 as the lead single from her debut extended play (EP), Title (2014), and unreleased debut studio album Title (2015). The song was co-written by Trainor and Kevin Kadish, and produced by Kadish. Trainor and Kadish's body image issues during adolescence served as the inspiration for the song; it was also influenced by the songs "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars and "Lollipop" by The Chordettes.
