It has been expected that the commercial launch of neera would bring relief to the crisis-torn coconut farming sector. According to excise minister K Babu, if at least 10% of coconut trees in the state were used to tap neera, the state exchequer would be able to make an annual profit of Rs 54,000 crore. Farmers would be able to reap a monthly profit of Rs 1,500 from a tree and labourers would also get their due.
Neera could be used as a health drink that would be several times better than the soft drinks available in the market. Babu said the commercialization of neera would not render several toddy tappers jobless.
"There is no truth in such arguments. Kerala has around 18 crore coconut trees. Of this, toddy is tapped fr om just five lakhs trees. If we could use at least 10% of the coconut trees, 10,000 more fresh jobs would be created. This would indirectly help the toddy sector as well,'' the minister said. Only government agencies have been licenced to produce and sell neera.
