Nokia X rooted: Google Now Launcher, Play Store working on Nokia's Android ... - Firstpost

That didn't take long at all. Nokia announced the X series with Android underpinnings and Microsoft services , to give any adopters a taste of what Microsoft's ecosystem is all about. But the Android developer community has already thrown a big spanner in their plans.

The Nokia X platform has now been rooted and developers have managed to install the Google Play Services framework as well as the Play Store on the phone. Root access gives users system-level privileges, which allows installation of custom ROMs and aftermarket system software.

The developer in question, an XDA Developers member kashamalaga got a Nokia X device at Mobile World Congress and expressed surprise at the ease with which he could get some Google Apps to work on the phone. He even managed to replace the tile interface of the Nokia X family with the Google Now Launcher, which was released to the Play Store last week.

While the Nokia X phones will ship with support for much of the Android app ecosystem, any potential movers from the existing Android user base would want to retain functionalities that they have become familiar with. Of course, on a default Nokia X, this wouldn't be possible and users would have to sign on to the Microsoft services ecosystem. This rooted method allows these users an unofficial way to retain their Google sign-ins.

Now we just have to wait for the flood of custom ROMs for the Nokia X. And we are not even close to the official launch of the phone.
