ET looks at top 5 rumours that seem to be doing the rounds ahead of Samsung Galaxy S5 launch.
An edge to edge display: Rumours abound that Samsung might be abandoning the bezel altogether and that the Galaxy S5 will sport an edge-to-edge design. The rumour seems to hold some weight because it syncs in with the expectation that Samsung might lose the home button with its latest offering. Also, an edge-to-edge screen makes sense given the UI upgrades to Android KitKat, which the phone is certain to come with. It also resonates with Google's recent indication to all the big Android brands to think about making everything on screen. And finally, iPhone 6 is also rumoured to come up with an edge-to-edge display, so it clearly makes sense for Sansung to get there first.
Fingerprint sensor: It is almost taken for granted that the Galaxy S5 will support fingerprint scanning, given the fact that its competitors, Apple with the iPone 5S and HTC with the One Max have already incorporated it in their flaghship devices. Recent reports reckon that at least part of the screen will be a fingerprint scanner, with 'hot corners' allowing users to log into their phone without having to make much effort. Samsung is apparently building the fingerprint scanner itself. Recently, it was speculated that the S5 would use retinal scanning to unlock the phone. We however believe that its still too soon for this tech to make its way to the phones.
High resolution display with 2560 x 1440 pixels: In addition to the edge to edge display, the Galaxy S5 is expected to sport a 5.2 or 5.25-inch AMOLED screen with a WQHD resolution (2560x1440) delivering 560ppi. It's not all about sharpness, as it could also lead to improved colour performance and refresh rate for slicker video and animations. Given Samsung wants to go 4K for its 2015 smartphones, the halfway resolution makes sense for next year's devices. We'd expect the S5 to stick with the Super AMOLED screen technology to allow it to reach this resolution.
16 MP Camera with Image Stabilization: The Galaxy S4 sported a pretty decent 13MP camera on its rear, but rumors surrounding Galaxy S5 suggest it will take things a little further with a 16MP camera. Samsung has announced a new CMOS image sensor dubbed ISOCELL which will almost certainly debut in the Galaxy S5, after the company told analysts the tech would be appearing in phones during 2014 and 2015. The new sensor isolates individual pixels, which in turn leads to higher colour fidelity, for sharper, richer images. In addition, Nokia and Sony both are already offering phones with 20MP cameras, so Samsung needs to go above 13MP to make a mark.
