Sony revealed the Xperia Z2 smartphone and tablet and mid-range M2 smartphone.
BARCELONA—Sony expanded its Xperia lineup here at MWC with the launch of a new Xperia Z2 smartphone, Xperia Z2 tablet, as well as the mid-range Xperia M2 smartphone.
The Xperia Z2 smartphone looks a lot like the Xperia Z1s. It has the same footprint, all-glass front, and aluminum edges, but the screen is bigger (5.2 inches) and Sony shaved a few millimeters off the thickness. The company also managed to pack in a 4K camcorder into the device, to compliment is 20.7-megapixel camera.
Pushing 4K into the handheld is big for Sony given the dearth of both 4K content and 4K displays at this point. Even so, Sony says it is future-proofing here. Sony also bumped up the CPU to a 2.3GHz Qualcomm processor and is using the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat software.
Sony is also building support for noise cancellation into the Xperia Z2's firmware. Connect any noise cancelling headphone, whether they are made by Sony, Bose, or another vendor, and the phone will be able to eliminate up to 98 percent of background noise. The technology works best with constant background sounds, like aircraft engines.
There is no word on pricing, but the real issue in the U.S. will be carrier support. In terms of specs, the Z2 could do well in the U.S. market, but only if it can gain traction with carriers. The product will shop in March.
The Z2 tablet, meanwhile, is the slimmest and lightest waterproof tablet, according to Sony, at 6.4mm and 426-439g depending on configuration. The 10.1-inch device runs a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and Adreno 330 GPU.
Sony talked up the integrated Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology, which will juice up the Z2 tablet 75 percent faster than similar devices, Sony said. The 6000mAh lithium polymer battery and Sony's Battery Stamina Mode provide up to 10 hours of multimedia usage and more than 100 hours music playback.
The Xperia Z2 comes equipped with OfficeSuite Pro 7 for viewing, editing, and sharing Microsoft Office files. Add the Bluetooth keyboard and tablet cover stand to turn the tablet into a laptop.
There's an 8.1-megapixel rear-racing camera and 2.2-megapixel front-facing HD chat camera. The tablet will be available in black or white globally starting in March.
Finally, the mid-range M2 smartphone sports a 4.8-inch 960-by-540 display and runs a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor. It has an 8-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom and HD video recording. It runs Google Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
