Google buys Israeli sound verification firm SlickLogin - Telegraph.co.uk

The technology, which allows websites to confirm a user's identify through sound recognition, is likely to be used as a form of password replacement or additional security measure.

The process works by clicking a SlickLogin-enabled button on a website and placing your smartphone nearby. WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS can all be used to determine the location of the phone, before a sound inaudible to human ears is played through the computer speakers. The phone recognises the unique sound, and authenticates the login.

A statement on the firm's website read: "Today we`re announcing that the SlickLogin team is joining Google, a company that shares our core beliefs that logging in should be easy instead of frustrating, and authentication should be effective without getting in the way.

"Google was the first company to offer two-step verification to everyone, for free - and they're working on some great ideas that will make the internet safer for everyone."

SlickLogin, which was founded because " security measures had become overly complicated and annoying", according to its website, declined to mention the financial details of the acquisition.

The deal is the latest of several Google has made in recent months, alongside purchasing London-based artificial intelligence company DeepMind Technologies for a reported £400 million and home gadget maker Nest Labs for $3.2 billion.
