BBM gets voice calling on Android, iPhone - Times of India

NEW DELHI: BlackBerry has started rolling out a new version of BBM or BlackBerry Messenger, its popular instant messaging app for Android, iPhone and BlackBerry users.

BBM users on Android and iPhone will now be able to make free voice calls to BBM contacts over a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection with BBM Voice, as well as access BBM Channels, a broadcast service.

BBM Channels allows users to chat with other BBM users on topics that interest them. They can join channels about a range of topics such as products, hobbies and sports to entertainment, fashion, cars and more. Channels can be created by brands, businesses and BBM customers alike and are a way to communicate directly and immediately. Channel owners can also schedule live chats and keep channels private.

In addition to this, BBM users on Android, iPhone and Black Berry smartphones will also get features like one-click sharing of photos, documents, voice notes and more, the ability to share their live location for a specified amount of time with other contacts, and 100 new emoticons.

The new version of BBM also comes with built-in support for Dropbox to facilitate transfer of large files like presentations and videos. Users can send a file from their personal cloud directly to a BBM contact. On the receiving end, the other user can save the file directly to the smartphone or add it to a Dropbox account.
