Snapchat updates app after hack exposed user details - Telegraph.co.uk

However, on New Years Eve an anonymous attacker posted the usernames and phone numbers of 4.6 million users on a website called SnapchatDB.info, which has since been suspended.

The hacker censored the last two digits of the phone numbers "in order to minimise spam and abuse", but offered to disclose the uncensored database "under certain circumstances". No other information was leaked or accessed in the attack, according to Snapchat.

In a statement to tech news site TechCrunch, the hackers explained that their motivation behind the attack was to raise public awareness around the issue, and put public pressure on Snapchat to fix the exploit.

"It is understandable that tech startups have limited resources but security and privacy should not be a secondary goal. Security matters as much as user experience does," they said.

Snapchat also said that, as well as releasing a new version of the app, it is improving its 'rate limiting' and other restrictions to address future attempts to abuse the service.

"The Snapchat community is a place where friends feel comfortable expressing themselves and we're dedicated to preventing abuse," it said.

Last year it was reported that Snapchat had turned down a $3 billion (£1.9bn) acquisition offer from Facebook. Snapchat's co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel is reportedly hoping for an even larger valuation.
