Cloud opens up skies in India: Satya Nadella - Times of India

BANGALORE: Satya Nadella, who is expected to be named the next Microsoft CEO, on a visit to Bangalore spoke exclusively to TOI in 2011. Excerpts from the interview.

How do you see the opportunity in India?

There's a huge pent up demand for computing services in India, and with the cloud making it easier to consume these services, many will for the first time be able to consume servers. They wouldn't want to pay an arm and a leg to Oracle or VMware to do that. They will want someone who has the best economics. And that's the most unique proposition we have for growth in India, with our cloud offerings.

For cloud, you have the Azure application development platform. What's the larger cloud strategy?

Our objective is to cloud-optimize every business. We think of the reality of our customers as that of hybrid IT; they will use a combination of public and private clouds. So we will give them Windows server and systems centre to create their private cloud, and give them Windows Azure for the public cloud. The commonalities between the two make it possible for businesses to consume both clouds seamlessly, move workloads from one to the other. In my last job I ran Bing with 250,000 servers. It gives us all the critical learnings for what is required to run a high-scale internet environment with our software, and provide that to enterprises. What the customer wants is that his application should never go down. These are areas where we have done a great job.

Those like Google and Amazon have been into cloud much earlier. How do you see them?

They don't have the footprint in the enterprise today in terms of the applications required. There is Google, Amazon, Salesforce .com on the public cloud side, and Oracle, VMware on the private cloud side. We are the only one that straddles both sides effectively. Every customer looks for someone who solves the public and private sides with commonality -- common identity, common virtualization, common management.
