Volkswagen's India line-up has yearned for a compact SUV for quite some time now. It looks like that is finally going to happen at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. Volkswagen had showcased the Taigun compact SUV concept at the Sao Paulo Motor Show back in October 2012. The Taigun compact SUV is based on the Up! hatch-back. The dimensions and design result in a car that has a large wheelbase with a normal overall length. At a glance the Taigun will look similar to the Skoda Yeti.

When the Taigun was unveiled in Brazil it had a turbocharged one-litre petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This engine pumped out around 108 BHP of power and peak torque came in at 175Nm. The Taigun will be an in city SUV and it does the 0-100kmph run in 9.2 seconds. Top speed is at an impressive 185kmph.
The company claims that the turbocharged, direct injection, 1.0-litre TSI on the Taigun can deliver a fuel efficiency of 21 kilometers per litre. It is unlikely that the Taigun will come with an all-wheel drive option as it is targeted as an in-city soft-roader.

The Taigun in India will most likely feature a re-tuned 1.2-litre TSI petrol. Although if it got the same engine as the GT TSI, it would be perfect. There isn't a diesel available in international markets, but the Taigun in India may receive one, probably sourced from the Vento. The Taigun looks like the quintessential Volkswagen SUV with the rugged side panels, roof rails and underbody protection.

The concept car showcased at the Brazil show had 17-inch alloy wheels and LED lights on the roof rails, but the production model will do away with this. The international production model may have more features and better aesthetics as the car in India will be price focused as always.

The Taigun will have to be competitively priced as it is entering what is arguably the hottest category at the moment. The Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster have taken away competition from C-segment sedans and are still getting over-booked. The EcoSport's eco-boost petrol has gained a great deal of appreciation and Renault may add a petrol option to the Duster soon.
