Taipei, Dec. 9 (CNA) Two of Taiwan's major telecom operators said Monday that they will soon offer information to local consumers about Apple Inc.'s "new iPad models," apparently referring to the iPad Air and iPad mini 2.
Taiwan Mobile Co. and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. said that consumers who register on their websites will get firsthand information about the new iPad tablets via text messaging or e-mail.
The companies, however, did not name the specific models or say exactly when they would become available.
Chunghwa Telecom Co., the country's largest mobile provider, said its customers need not register online but will be able to purchase the tablets directly at its stores soon.
The iPad Air and iPad mini 2 are likely hit store shelves in Taiwan "this week or next week," depending on when Apple makes the announcement, a source in the local distribution network told CNA on condition of anonymity because the sales terms have not yet been ma de public.
The 9.7-inch iPad Air is 20 percent thinner and 28 percent lighter than the fourth generation iPad, while the 7.9-inch iPad mini 2 features a razor-sharper retina display.
The 16GB Wi-Fi iPad Air starts at US$499 in the United States and a similar model of the iPad mini 2 starts at US$399.
