Facebook News Feed to prioritise 'high quality' articles and relegate 'meme photos' - Telegraph.co.uk

Articles which have received a number of new comments will also be bumped back up the News Feed, Facebook said.

Varun Kacholia, engineering manager, and Minwen Ji, a software engineer, added: "As a result, people may start seeing a few more stories returning to their feed with new comments highlighted.

"Our testing has shown that doing this in moderation for just a small number of stories can lead to more conversations between people and their friends on all types of content."

"Our surveys show that on average people prefer links to high quality articles about current events, their favourite sports team or shared interests, to the latest meme."

It is not clear how Facebook will make its judgement of what is "quality" and what is not.

In October the company announced that average referral traffic from Facebook to media sites has almost tripled in the past year, and this latest announcement is in line with that trend.
