Samsung Eyes 4K Devices With Foldable Displays by 2015 - PC Magazine

Samsung made a lot of promises at a recent analyst event, from fully foldable screens and hugely pixelated devices to, unfortunately, something named the "fonblet."

At this week's Analyst Day — Samsung's first in eight years — the Korean tech giant highlighted upcoming plans that it hopes will entice investors and customers to stick with the popular brand.

Only a month after unveiling the curved Galaxy Round smartphone, Samsung this week shared plans for new device form factors. According to a slide posted online (below), Samsung will moved into "bended" displays starting next year, followed by "foldable" screens. But the chart acknowledges there are "technology barriers" Samsung must get past before foldable gadgets become a reality.

Samsung already showed off a prototype bendable display at this year's CES, as well as a device with a display that wrapped around the edges of the phone.

In another slide (click above), Samsung also tipped devices with increased screen resolution - all the way up to 4K, which has thus far been reserved for TVs. Samsung said it is looking to produce 2,560-by-1,440 displays by 2014 and ultra high-def (4K), or 3,840-by-2,160 displays by 2015.

Meanwhile, in a move sure to enrage language purists and those who already hate the "phablet" moniker, Samsung will refer to large-display phones with a stylus and handwriting support as a "fonblet."

The Analyst Day event also allowed for some bragging about the success of Samsung's existing products. According to the company, more than 100 million of its flagship Galaxy S and Galaxy Note units were shipped this year.
