Apple Inc. (AAPL) confirmed its iPad mini with retina display will go on sale starting Tuesday, becoming the company's first smaller-sized tablet to come with a higher-resolution display.
Last month, Apple said it planned to start selling a new version of the smaller iPad with a higher-resolution, 7.9-inch screen some time this month. The iPad mini with retina display will be priced starting at $399 for the 16 gigabyte model before a cellular plan, $499 for the 32-gigabyte model, $599 for the 64 gigabyte model and $699 for the 128 gigabyte model. The original iPad mini also remains available.
The Wall Street Journal had reported Monday that the blog Macrumors.com earlier had spotted a posting on the internal Apple site for product reseller and technicians, called GSX, saying the iPad mini would go on sale Tuesday in the U.S., Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore.
Other media and industry analysts have reported that Apple's suppliers -- in particular its display providers -- were struggling to meet the demands of the iPad mini, causing a delay in roll-out and limiting inventory. The new iPad Air -- larger than the Mini with a 9.7-inch screen -- went on sale on Nov. 1.
Shares were down 0.22% at $517.90 in recent premarket trading.
