Amazon has refreshed its Kindle Fire lineup with a new name this year. Called the Kindle Fire HDX, the new series has two variants; 7-inch and 8.9-inch ones. The former one has been designed as Amazon's candidate to the new midsize tablet frenzy, and therefore it is a solid rival to Apple iPad Mini 2 and Google Nexus 7 2. This way, the bigger screen HDX targets Apple's new premium model iPad Air.
Display: In case of display, both the tablets are quite impressive. But as per most analysts, though a bit smaller, Kindle Fire HDX's screen is the best of the duo. It is sporting an 8.9-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels at 339-ppi. It is when iPad Air's LED-backlit Multi-Touch IPS screen is touting only 2048 x 1536 resolution at 264-ppi.
Apart from this, the Fire HDX 8.9 is observed to be having a finer screen than iPad Air, because it works quite better under reflective lighting conditions. Also it has the lowest reflectance of all higher-end tablets. Apple's new tablet also does well with crystal clarity of its display.
Processor, Power: In processing performance also, the Fire HDX 8.9 and iPad Air are locking horns very extremely. The new iPad Air, following on from the new iPhone 5S, packs Apple's brand new A7 chipset with the same 64-bit architecture.
Well, this processor setup makes the gadget one of the best performing machines in market. At the same time, Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 doesn't fall short of. It is built around the well-known Snapdragon 800 quad core CPU and other rich specs. So the devices are almost equal in processing power and performance, and so they can be identical options for customers.
Size & Weight: The new iPad has arrived in stores with a rather polished and thin body. Apple has shaped the device borrowing some design cues from its iPad Mini original. Anyways, overall dimensions of the device go at 240 x 169.5 x 7.5mm and it weighs at 469 grams.
If you consider the same details of Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, that device does well in weight. Being a rather smaller one, it is scales up to only 374g. In case of thinness, it falls short to iPad Air as it has a body that is thicker at 7.8mm. Other dimensions are 231 x 158mm.
Camera: Needless to say, camera is another very important factor. Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 does well in this regard, though. It is equipped with a decent 8MP autofocus rear camera that has LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus and image stabilization as major highlights.
Meanwhile, iPad Air just has a rather moderate 5MP sensor on the back panel. Both the devices have feeble 720p video taking front snapper. It is a nice observation that a big screen tablet doesn't always want huge rear cameras as long as users don't regularly use them to capture stills.
Price: Amazon's new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is to roll out for a worthy price tag of $379.99. Meanwhile, Apple iPad Air starts at $499 and it goes up to $929 depending on various models and memory options. A plus of around $100 will be there if you want to buy a cellular variant of the gadget.
