Hero sold an average 1.7-lakh Splendor bikes a month in the first half of FY14, against monthly sales of 85,000 bikes of the Discover range. Built on a new platform, the Discover 100 M is priced at Rs 45,996 to Rs 49,000, excluding insurance and road tax, in New Delhi and is also pitted against Honda Motorcycle & Scooter's new 100 cc motorcycle, the Dream Neo, besides Splendor.
The Discover did actually manage to edge ahead of Splendor in September last year but since the Hero bikes have pulled way ahead. So there's a lot riding on the new bike for Bajaj Auto. "The Discover 100 M is the game changer for us; it should bring us big volumes," said K Srinivas, president, motorcycle business, Bajaj Auto.
"We had the presence at the entry level of 100 cc with Discover 4G and a top-end of 100 cc Discover 100T. With the Discover 100 M, we are bridging the gap of the value segment, which accounts for over 45% of the overall motorcycle market."
The new bike plugs a significant gap for Bajaj Auto as the mid-price, value segment accounts for almost 75% of the more than half-a-million 100 cc motorcycles sold in the country. Such 'value' bikes accounted for 45% of the overall motorcycle market, with sales averaging 3.78-lakh units a month in the last six months.
The Splendor has a market share of more than 50%, while Bajaj Auto has 18-20%, with close to 75,000 units sold every month. Honda Motorcycle sells about 25,000 of the recently launched Dream Neo every month.
"Simple economic tells us if there are two bikes with a similar perceived value, people will tend to choose the lesser-priced bike," he said. "One needs to see how distinct the new Discover 100 M is within its own family and externally with regards to the Splendor Plus." Aside from this, two-wheeler buyers tend to commit to one of the strong brands, such as Splendor or Pulsar, early in the purchase process, he said.
Hero MotoCorp said the Splendor has been its largest selling brand for years and that the company sold more than two million of the bikes last fiscal. Sales of Hero's Passion bikes, the number two brand, amounted to 1.3 million.
The company's spokesperson said the top three brands in the country in the current fiscal's first half were all from the Hero stable. "We have already sold more than a million units (10,39,006) of Splendor, which is more than double of Discover, which sold 5,01,270 units," the official said. "In fact, another Hero motorcycle brand, HF Deluxe, alone has sold 5,07,397 units during this period, which is more than what the entire Discover family sold during the same time."
