Wikimedia Foundation has decided to stop Wikipedia Zero, which allows Wikipedia users to browse Wikipedia content via smartphones in some countries for free, without the cost of Internet access, in cooperation with telecommunications companies.

Wikimedia launched the project in 2012 to deliver the content of the encyclopedia to a larger number of users in emerging countries with limited Internet connectivity and relatively high cost to provide them with free knowledge.

Now, the Foundation will not hold any new partnership agreements this year and previous agreements will not be extended, meaning that this year the project will be completely shut down.

Wikimedia cited a number of reasons for shutting down the project, most notably that users in developing countries do not already know about Wikipedia and do not browse it compared to users in developed countries.

The cost of connecting to the network has decreased significantly in many countries over the past five years and is one of the main reasons for the removal of the project.
