OnePlus drops ColorOS in China in favor of in-house made ROM

Tags: OnePlus , Android

The international version of the OnePlus One runs a custom-made CyanogenMod 11S ROM, but in China, the phone comes with Oppo's ColorOS out of the box. That's about to change, as company's CEO Pete Lau has decided it's time OnePlus develops its own ROM, tailored-made for the Chinese market.

The new ROM should be ready by the time the company releases its next flagship smartphone next year.

The company has also shifted its software development team in Taiwan. The reason behind the move is that the country offers amazing talent pool of Android software developers and OnePlus aims to take full advantage of this.

In his interview to the Chinese Sina, Lau said that he feels quite happy with the partnership with Cyanogen. He also specified that stock Android isn't particularly suiting for the Chinese market, as the country's draconian firewall makes a lot of the operating system useless.

As a result, OnePlus' custom ROM is expected to offer a lot of the features of ColorOS, but with a customized visual experience and with China-specific services.
