Microsoft sued over browser error that cost it $731 mn
Washington DC: Software giant Microsoft has been sued by a shareholder of the company identified as Kim Barovic who has accused the board of directors of the company of not offering consumer choices.
Barovic, a shareholder has filed a shareholder derivative suit in a Washington court. In her suit, Barovic has accused Microsoft of willfully violating an European Union (EU) regulation that wanted the company to give users a choice of 11 web browsers aside from its Internet Explorer.
The company's decision to violate the call resulted in an anti-trust settlement EU that cost a fine of $731.
In March this year the company was fined "about 1 percent of the company's 2012 revenues."
Terming it "technical error" Microsoft took full responsibility for this mistake. Even the former CEO Steve Ballmer's (who stepped down in 2013 making way for Satya Nadella) annual bonus was reduc ed because of this mistake.
This was "partly as a result of the company's browser problems with the EU and also due to the disappointing performance of its online services unit," Bloomberg reported.
Barovic said in the lawsuit that she had asked Microsoft's board to probe how that mistake occurred and to take action against any directors or executives who had failed to perform their duties.
