Former Apple CEO, John Sculley has now launched his own smartphone brand which is called Obi Mobiles. The company will start off with making devices for the Indian market, with initially bringing devices priced between Rs 5,000 and Rs 8,000.
This new brand is being funded by Singapore-based Inflexionpoint, which will initially invest invest $20 million in the business as reported by CNBC TV18.
Sculley is looking at margins around 20 percent and he expects to sell a million units and be profitable within five months. According to him, Obi will launch smartphones which will bundled with valued added services. There is no information on what kind of services will be offered.
The brand is being headed by Ajay Sharma, who was previously the country head for HTC in India and was also heading Micromax's smartphone division before joining the Obi team.
Another report had suggested that Inflexipoint-owned company called Iris Computers will distribute the smartphones in the country via its many branches and vendors. Singapore-based Dragon Technology will get these devices manufactured in China and supplied to Iris.
