The deceased was identified as Nitin Shankarrao Parlikar (50) from Bhusari colony in Kothrud.
The PMPML bus (MH12/HB1318), driven by Kiran Narayan Pawar (25) of Satara, had started from Kothrud bus depot and was going towards Vishrantwadi. At around 8.10pm, the brakes of the bus failed. The vehicle did not stop even when the driver applied the hand brake. Pawar then took a left turn into a lane to avoid the busy road. In his attempt to stop the bus, he lost control and knocked down Parlikar who was standing with his motorcycle (MH12/CU 8425) on the side of the road while talking on the cellphone.
Parlikar came under the left rear wheel and died on the spot due to multiple injuries. The driver panicked and drove up to a few metres when the bus came to a complete halt due to a technical glitch.
Sub -inspector Salim Nadaf of the Kothrud police station on Saturday said investigations revealed that after Pawar realized that the brakes had failed, he informed Kothrud depot officials about it.
"We removed the bus with the help of a crane. The bus is at the police station. The regional transport office has been asked to examine the bus and give its opinion. Pawar was arrested under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act," said Nadaf.
S R Kusalkar, PMPML accident department head, said, "The PMPML has ordered an inquiry into the incident and will also seek an expert opinion to ascertain the real cause of the incident. The driver has told us that after the brakes failed, he panicked and took the left turn, but the vehicle hit the motorcyclist."
It was only last month, on February 15, when an empty PMPML bus hit another bus and a two-wheeler before crashing into an electric pole after its brakes failed at Puram chowk on Tilak Road. No one was injured in the accident.
