BARCELONA: NOKIA CEO Stephen Elop has said he expects the Nokia X to "damage" the low-end Android smartphone market, while leveraging both its own and Microsoft's services.
Speaking at Nokia's Developer Conference at Mobile World Congress on Tuesday, Elop talked up the Nokia X line-up, comprising the Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL, claiming that the handsets' unique features and heavily customised user interface will "damage" the existing low-end Android market. Elop added that he expects the devices to sell in the "tens of millions".
Elop said, "Nokia X gives people a gateway to Microsoft, which is a key part of our strategy and it represents a very deliberate strategy to leverage Microsoft services. I am personally so excited about the next chapter in this journey as we go on with the introduction of this new family, and do some damage to other low-cost Android devices.
"We have designed this line to compete directly with affordably-priced Android devices - and we believe Nokia X will win customers' hearts because it features traditional, strong Nokia traits, and because it offers a unique selection of apps and services. It's going to sell to tens of millions of people."
Elop went on to address how developers can work freely across both the Nokia X Android line and its Windows Phone Lumia range, assuring developers that it will be "extremely easy" to have their apps available on both Android and Windows Phone.
"By using Microsoft services, the Nokia X becomes a 'feeder' for Lumia. This ensures a high-degree of Android app compatibility, which means Android apps run right out of the box on the Nokia X," he said.
"Nokia X gives people a gateway to Microsoft, which is a key part of our strategy."
This follows yesterday's comments by Elop, in which he reaffirmed that Windows Phone remains the company's primary smartphone strategy. ยต
