The company's Rick Osterloh said wearable devices "are all extremely ugly - we are trying to solve the problem of style"
Motorola has taken a swipe at its competitors Samsung, Sony and Huawei who showcased their wearable devices at the Mobile World Congress.
Rick Osterloh, the Senior VP of Product at Motorola Mobility, branded the other technology firms products "ugly" during a press conference.
His embattled company , which was sold by Google to China's Lenova for $2.91bn in January, lost $4.3bn between 2007 and 2009.
But Osterloh pulled no punches at a Q&A session at the Casa Lotja, in the historic centre of Barcelona.
He said of his firm's rivals wearable devices: "They are all extremely ugly. We are trying to solve the problem of style.".
The solution, claims Osterloh, is a range of smartwatches that will look "like jewellery" and are hoped to become the hottest items in the burgeoning wearable device market.
Motorola plan to release their smartwatch later in the year and Osterloh said issues "like style and battery life" will be solved.
He was referring to the MotoACTV fitness tracker, a watch-style product which had a 1.6in screen and was slammed by critics for its poor performance.
