Android in January: JB and KitKat climb at Gingerbread expense

Tags: Android , State of Android

In December we saw that Jelly Bean and KitKat are the one gaining ground among Android smartphones and, as you could expect, the trend continues in the month of January. Jelly Bean and KitKat are now responsible for 62.5% of all Android devices, while 2.3 Gingerbread and 4 Ice Cream Sandwich have dropped by 1.2 and 0.8 percentage points, respectively.

Jelly Bean's 4.1 release is the only one that has dropped (35.9% in December to 35.5% in January) while version 4.2 climbed from 15.4% to 16.3% and the 4.3 release jumped from 7.8% to 8.9%.

KitKat is growing, albeit at a relatively slow pace - it has moved just 0.4% percentage points and now covers 1.8% of the droids out there. Honeycomb remains at the 0.1% it was a month ago.

As for graphics - OpenGL ES version 2.0 covers a whopping 92.3% of the platform while 3.0 is still only available on 7.6% of the droids.
