Since the return of VLC on the App Store in July 2013, the developers have released a total six updates that addressed several bugs and added new features. However, this release brought significant changes to the popular multimedia player, VLC for iOS, even though it bumps the version to v2.2 not 3.0. Especially, the new version introduces the iOS 7-native user interface and support for multi-touch gestures.

Given the number of new features, VideoLAN has also included a "getting started" tutorial to explain the gestures functions. As aforementioned, the layout has updated following the Apple's iOS 7 UI guidelines, and integrated support for one-touch playback controls. Now, a tap with two fingers on the display starts or stops playback, a pinch-to-zoom out close the player, a swipe to the left or right changes the playback point, one swipe vertically on the left side adjusts the brightness, and one swipe vertically on change the volume on the right side.

Among other changes that simplify the use of VLC play on the iPhone and iPad are endless repetition, sorting TV series by number of episodes and music albums by track number, auto-play the next track in the album, ability to rename files in the library, and improved privacy with the use of the Passcode Lock.

Besides, the v2.2 has also aided support for streaming from DropBox and UPnP media servers, HTTP Live streaming and downloads from Google Drive, and improved the reliability during uploading over Wi-Fi. As regards, the support for VP9 and HEVC (H.265) codec have also been added for video compression.

Hopefully, these're enough reasons to switch to VLC player. If you say so, then what are you waiting for? You can download VLC 2.2 for iOS from the App Store for free.
