Davos 2014: Yahoo calls for greater NSA transparency - Telegraph.co.uk

"We really want to be able to do the same thing on the NSA level," she said. "What is murky is that people don't know"

Gavin Patterson, the chief executive of BT, echoed Ms Mayer's call for action. He said that Parliament should consider new legislation on the issue.

"Government legislation has to catch up," he said. "It is often several years behind and in this sphere it is not fit for purpose.

"There need to be clear guidelines on what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. It is just too murky at the moment."

Mr Patterson said that people understood that some sacrifice of privacy was necessary for reasons of security but the public needed to know what the rules were.

Last week President Barack Obama tried to seize the initiative on the NSA controversy, saying that there needed to be more transparency about how the body operated.

He is expected to ask Congress to set out new rules on how data is stored and used by the NSA. The rules are expected the put stronger controls in place on the wholesale harvesting of mobile phone data and widespread surveillance operations on heads of state and non-US governments.

During the digital session at the World Economic Conference, Ms Mayer also said that 2014 was a "tipping point" and that this year would see more Yahoo data and services accessed via mobile devices than via PCs.

She said that "sharing" sites like AirBnB, which puts people with spare rooms in contact with people looking for overnight accommodation, would rebuild trust between people.

John Chambers, the chief executive of Cisco, said that the "internet of things" would release $19trn of value to the global economy over the next decade.

Businesses and homes will be able to be much more efficient when technology is used to control heating systems, driving and lighting, for example.

Randall Stephenson, the chief executive of AT&T, praised BT for changing itself from a fixed line business into one of the leading providers of high-speed internet services via fibre connection.

He also said BT's move into content with its bid for Premier League and Champions League football had been the right move.

Mr Patterson said that growth of broadband speeds would provide the biggest change in technology over the next five years.

He said that BT was working on a 1 Gigabyte service with its GFast project which would hugely improve services for businesses and retail customers.
