Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch
SummaryWith Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch logging terrible sales, spotlight put on Apple Inc. 'iWatch'.
Launched in late September, Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch has mustered sales of just 50,000 units, suggesting the device has not managed to gain interest from the market.
According to a report published in a Korean journal, daily sales of Galaxy Gear smartwatch to date are between 800 and 900 units.
Speculation has been mounting that Apple Inc. is planning to release its own so-called 'iWatch' at some point in 2014. It has been claimed that such a device would focus on biometrics and health information feedback.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch was launched in September with a great deal of hype by Samsung, including a series of television spots pushing its debut.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear was widely panned in reviews at launch, as critics cited a high $300 price tag, limited functionality and poor battery life as significant knocks against the wrist-worn accessory. The device was initially limited to connectivity with the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, but later support for the Galaxy S3, S4 and Note 2 was added eventually.
In India, the Gear is now selling for Rs 22,900.
Earlier reports also indicated that resellers were seeing exceptionally high return rates on the Galaxy Gear of up to 30 per cent. That allegedly prompted concern among Samsung, who asked employees of Samsung Experience shops to ascertain reasons for the high incidence of dissatisfaction.
In a report, Samsung has claimed that it has sold 800,000 Galaxy Gear units over the past two months since the smartwatch has been on store shelves. Samsung didn't say how many units it had expected to sell, but said that sales have so far exceeded expectations.
Meanwhile, there are report that Samsung Electronics plans to ship 100 million tablets in 2014. The company's supply chain is reportedly gearing up for materials and parts to ship a massive number of tablets on the company's behalf next year.
