Android 4.4 KitKat Revealed: What's New? - PC Magazine

Android 4.4 KitKat Revealed: What

After months of rumors, Google finally unveiled its Nexus 5 smartphone in a low-key blog post that also heralded the arrival of Android 4.4 KitKat.

Google first revealed the KitKat moniker in September, after many though the OS would be named Key Lime Pie. But with KitKat, Google gets a familiar candy tie in, and a mascot that was probably easier to make into a statue for the Google lawn than a piece of pie.

But Android KitKat is more than a sugary treat. As usual, the updated mobile OS brings with it a host of new features, several of which we've highlighted in the attached slideshow. The full list is rather extensive, and also includes things like touch-screen improvements, updated NFC architecture, secure app sandboxes, low-power audio playback, HDR+ photography, and full-screen wallpapers with preview. But read on for some of the highlights.

The Nexus 5 will be the first device with Android KitKat, but Motorola and HTC have also provided some details on the devices they expect to upgrade to 4.4, including the new Moto X. If you can't wait, the unlocked Nexus 5 is available in the Google Play store for $349, though Sprint will release it on Nov. 8 and T-Mobile will add the new Nexus to its lineup sometime this month, too.
