Tata Motors Introduces Bi-Fuel Version of Nano Minicar - Wall Street Journal

NEW DELHI--Tata Motors Ltd. (TTM) Tuesday extended its Nano minicar range with a new model that can run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas.

The introduction of the new car is aimed at not only selling an eco-friendly variant of the Nano but is also an attempt to revive local sales. Sales of the Nano plunged 74% from a year earlier to 10,202 units during the April-September period.

Some cities in India, especially the nation's capital New Delhi, have adopted CNG for use by buses as well as cars to reduce vehicular pollution. CNG also costs less than gasoline, making it a cheaper fuel for use by car owners.

Companies such as Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Honda Motor Co. and General Motors Co. already sell cars in India with CNG options.

The Nano CNG emax will be able to travel 36 kilometers on one kilogram of compressed natural gas, the company says. The car will initially be sold in markets such as Delhi and parts of Maharashtra and Lucknow, where CNG is available at fuel outlets.

The Nano emax will be sold in two versions--a basic version costing 240,000 rupees ($3,880) and a top-end version costing 265,000 rupees--at Delhi dealerships.

Since its debut in early 2009, the Nano--billed as the world's cheapest car--has been powered by a 624 cubic-centimeter gasoline engine.

Prices of the three gasoline versions currently cost 150,000 rupees, 195,000 rupees and 220,000 rupees in Delhi.
