Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch: hands-on review - Telegraph.co.uk

The newly released Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch gives users several of the basic functions of modern smartphones in a conventiently small package, even if it may take a while for the public to get used to the sight of them being used.

"This is a whole new category of technology that Samsung hope will compliment the smartphones that people already use, and will allow them to save huge amounts of time by not bothering to pull them out of their pockets every time they vibrate with an email," says Matt Warman , The Telegraph's Head of Technology.

The recommended retail price for the Gear smartwatch is £299, and with other manufacturers set to releaase similar devices in the next year, some experts predict up to 5 million smartwatches could be sold by the end of 2014.

"It's a fairly small screen but it lets you read enough information to be useful and it tells you whether it's worth picking up your phone to find out a lot more," he says.

Matt tested the phone function on the device by calling a colleague, who reported that it sounded no different from a conventional phone.

"Samsung think that it could well become like the iPhone or the iPod. That remains to be seen because it's all about consumer adoption, but we wrote off Bluetooth headsets and we wrote off tablets. They have gone on to be hugely successful," he says.
