TORONTO—The troubles keep piling up for BlackBerry Ltd. Just a few hours after beginning the free rollout of its popular messaging tool BlackBerry Messenger to Android phones and iPhones, the company announced Saturday night that it was pausing the rollout due to "issues" caused by a leak of the application. In a post on its official company blog, BlackBerry said that an "unreleased version" of the BBM for Android app made its way online before the official app was posted. Users started downloading that app, creating problems for the company's technical team. "Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it's ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM," the post said. "We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone." The company said it will now stagger the rollout of the BBM app for Android. The hiccup couldn't have come at a worse time for the Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone maker. On Friday the company announced a charge of nearly $1 billion for unsold smartphones and the layoffs of 40% of the company's employees. BBM and its 60 million users have long been one of the company's strengths, and the rollout was supposed to help bolster a company whose smartphone sales have fallen flat.
