Apple's iOS 7 serves up a new "flat" design, iTunes Radio, and a few other bells and whistles, but it does not make your iPhone or iPad waterproof.
That might seem obvious to most of those with an iDevice, but a fake notice making the rounds on social media apparently fooled a few people, who ruined their phones and tablets when testing out the new "feature."
As Sky New reported, the fake advertisement shows an iPhone and iPad surrounded by a splash of water. "Update to iOS 7 and become waterproof," the tagline reads. "In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone's power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry," according to the accompanying text.
Sadly, iOS 7 does not ruggedize your device, but not everyone got the memo, with some taking to Twitter to curse the faux ad. As the news made the rounds, however, others were incredulous that anyone would fall for the hoax, while others sarcastically recommended that people try it out.
"Whoever fell for the fake 'iOS 7 makes your device waterproof' advert, I beg you to look up Darwinism," one user wrote.
"How could anyone think that iOS 7 makes your phone waterproof. That'd be like sony releasing firmware that turns your PS3 pink," another user chimed in.
iOS 7 made its debut on Sept. 18. It is available as a free upgrade for the iPhone 4 and above, iPad 2 and above, iPad mini, and fifth-generation iPod touch. It also comes pre-installed on the new iPhone 5s and 5c. Apple revealed yesterday that more than 200 million iOS devices now have the upgraded OS installed.
